RAND Corporation, a think tank in the United States, held “The U.S.-Japan Alliance Conference Series” on three days from the 5th to the 7th of November 2014 at its headquarters campus in Santa Monica, California, USA. Dr. Yamashita, Research Director of CIGS, joined one of three conferences held on the 7th of November focusing on “Ensuring the Stable Evolution of an Open, Rules-Based Liberal International Order,” in which he spoke on the theme “Agricultural Policy Reform & Free Trade.”

The international conference "Abenomics - stock-taking and lessons for the EU" was held on the 8th of October 2014 in Brussels, jointly hosted by Bruegel, a think tank in Belgium, and Kobe University in Japan. The conference consisted of four panels. Dr. Yamashita, Research Director of CIGS, joined the third panel "New trade linkage between Europe and Japan: trade policy under Abenomics" in which he presented on the theme "Abenomics on Agriculture & Free Trade."

The dialogue on “Tackling Agriculture in the Post-Bali Context: The Challenge of Updating Global Rules on Trade” was held on the 13th and the 14th of October 2014 in Geneva, Switzerland, jointly organized by the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD), an independent non-profit organization based in Geneva, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The dialogue consisted of four sessions both on the 13th and the 14th. Dr. Yamashita, Research Director of CIGS, joined the third session on the 13th titled “How could new preferential trade negotiations affect markets for food and agriculture,” in which he spoke on the theme “FTA & Food and Agriculture trade diversion? WTO+, price or payment.”

In May 2014, CIGS hosted the "CIGS Conference on Macroeconomic Theory and Policy 2014" under the theme of “Recent Development in Macroeconomics” where world-leading scholars and researchers in macroeconomics as well as Japanese young researchers gathered for deep discussions.

On May 30, 2014, Prof. Selahattin Imrohoroglu, CIGS International Senior Fellow, lectured and led a discussion entitled "Achieving Actuarial Balance in Social Security: Measuring the Welfare Effects on Individuals."

On 23rd May 2014, the CIGS received a visit by two guests from Bruegel, a prominent European think-tank based in Brussels, whose official name is Brussels European and Global Economic Laboratory. The Guests were Dr Gregory Claeys (Research Fellow) and Ms Pauline Labib (Development Manager). The following issues were discussed with the management members, researchers and advisors of the CIGS.

Mr. Surasak Saokaew (Instructor, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Phayao, Thailand) stayed in the CIGS as an International Research Fellow for about 3 months. Under the supervision of Dr. Kamae, our Research Director, and jointly with Mr. Takashi Sugimoto, the Graduate School of Medicine of the University of Tokyo, he conducted the comparative study of the databases that are potentially usable for the implementation of Health Technology Assessment in Thailand and Japan.
He presented the study result in the workshop at the CIGS together with Mr. Sugimoto.

Ms. Kashiwagi was invited to the 5th International Tax Dialogue (ITD) global conference in Morocco and gave a speech about the tax Administration of Japanese local government.
