Event information for the meeting
Many people see agricultural reform in Japan as one of the first steps towards addressing the full range of structural issues needed for Japan to effectively engage in the high-standards Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement.
Please join the U.S.-Japan Business Council (USJBC) and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for a special program with Japan's foremost agricultural policy and international trade expert, Dr. Kazuhito Yamashita (Research Director at the Canon Institute for Global Studies), as we look at Japan's debate over long-term agricultural reform and consider intensely divided views on how to reconcile such reforms with TPP participation.
After three decades with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MAFF), Dr. Yamashita has a wealth of experience and knowledge on agricultural policy issues and is the leading proponent for agricultural policy reform in Japan. Before joining the Canon Institute of Global Studies, Dr. Yamashita held senior MAFF positions,
including:
Director of the GATT Affairs Division,
Counselor for the Japanese Mission to the E.U.,
Director of the Rural Development Division, and
Deputy Director-General of the International Affairs Department.

With his research findings and analysis widely published in both English and Japanese, Dr. Yamashita has openly called for Japan's participation in free-trade agreements as a way to sustain and revitalize Japan's ailing agricultural industry and create export markets for Japanese produce.
Don't miss this unique opportunity to hear one of Japan's foremost experts on agricultural reform at a time when unlocking the industry could pave the way for Japan's eventual participation in the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
